A Study on the Housing Preference of the Elderly
Lee In-Soo

Abstract
The fast growth of the elderly population and nuclear families have been creating substantial needs for residential facilities of the aged people in Korea. In this study, reviews on housing preference of the elderly have been performed based on previous researches. In this study, the results of the analyses propose developmental strategies for the elderly housing in korea as follows :

1. Housing preference and other psychological trends of the Korean elderly are rooted in changeable condition of the emotion and lack of knowledge. Therefore, the housing preference of the Korean elderly should not be considered a fixed reflection ; rather, it should be regarded as a continuously adjusted trends according to later experience and emotional status after residing in the elderly care facilities.

2. There is a strong norm toward ownership of the housing unit in later life in Korea. Therefore future form of elderly housing should allow ownership of each unit as well as rental agreement, to the Korean elderly.

3. In order to relieve extreme stress of the elderly upon entrance into the elderly facility, there should be governmental policies offering (1) education on perspectives of the elderly housing for the elderly, (2) preliminary admission system before deciding longterm residence, and (3) guidelines of legal responsibility on critical events of the older residents.

4. The elderly housing should be social areas allowing various interactions among the residents, as well as primary care facilities, and all the care workers and volunteers be rigorously trained and educated about moral attitudes toward the elderly residents.
